It’s been a few weeks now since I joined the crazy world that is Vend, having announced I would be joining them last year. Nestled in the heart of Auckland (among other cities worldwide), you will find an office filled with green t-shirt wearing people who simply seem to love what they do. More so than ever before, I seemed to have jumped on board with a company that truly believes in what they’re trying to achieve (which is world domination of course).

Getting the lay of the land was pretty easy and all things became clear. So here’s what I learnt during week 1:

1 – If work sucks then leave

All to often, especially when you’ve been at a company a while doing the same job, the doldrums can set it. Maybe the work is no longer a challenge, the company seems to be stagnant or it’s as simple as the pay is shit or the people around you are super boring.

My answer – get out. And soon. It’s clichéd and you’ve probably read it a thousand times but seriously work doesn’t have to be a chore, you should be doing what you love. Having spent time with companies that no longer floated my boat, as soon as I found Vend I knew that an exciting challenge was lurking. It was going to be hectic and challenging but even within the first week I was itching to get stuck in.

2 – Employees are adults, go figure

Yes Vend has copious amounts of stuff that could distract you from work – table tennis, pool, nerf guns, a whole heap of food and snacks etc etc. But funnily enough people actually get work done and a lot of it. They’re adults, they like to enjoy their environment but they don’t take the piss. Vend wouldn’t have got to where they are in 4 years without everyone putting in a massively solid effort every day. If you hire people that align themselves with the goals of the company they are going to want to work hard to achieve them, and those that want to join just to take the piss and drink beer all day soon get found out.

Watching the Super Bowl (while still hard at it) and one of the full snack drawers – gotta get in quick though.

3 – Having dogs in the office is amazing

Except when they poo (which funnily enough isn’t that often) having dogs around is freaking amazing. They are just so cute and fluffy!
